Dress Her Up/Dress Her Down
Digital collage on transparency, 2026
This piece highlights the rise in AI being used to target and police women’s bodies. On X, the “Grok” AI bot has been repeatedly used to undress women by circumnavigating the explicit image generation guidelines. Men have used prompts like “dental floss bikini” and “Saran Wrap dress” to prompt Grok to undress these women from fully clothed photos without these women’s consent. There are instances of these types of prompts even being used to undress children. On the other hand, Grok has also been used to cover up women rather than undress them, highlighting how the rise of AI technology has stripped women of their bodily autonomy - men are using AI for control over women’s bodies.
In this piece, I examine this prevalent issue by presenting a collection of real tweets where men have prompted AI to dress and undress women. The left column focuses on tweets asking Grok to undress women, while the right column focuses on tweets asking Grok to cover them up. Superimposed over these tweets is a large sheet of transparency featuring a woman wearing a dress made of female human and doll parts, making this figure simultaneously dressed and undressed at the same time. Interspersed within this collage are real tweets of women reacting to their bodies being manipulated by AI and X’s lackluster response to this violation. This piece aims to draw attention to this issue and men’s attempts to control the female body, even in digital form, and the need to regulate AI to protect women and children who have been deeply harmed by it.
